Avoiding Accidents Related to Conveyors

Mechanical material handling systems that move materials and goods from one location to another in a predetermined travel path are called conveyor systems. Businesses benefit in the use of conveyors in such a way that conveyor systems help in increasing transportation efficiency and reducing the need for manual efforts.

Despite of the benefits, however, conveyor systems can cause a high number of serious injuries and even fatalities. Every year, industries such as retail, warehousing, general manufacturing, pharmaceutical, marine terminals, metal working, food handling, quarry and bag palletizer encounter problems related to workers getting injured or killed because of defective conveyors. Most employees who work around conveyor systems on a day to day basis have no idea that defective conveyors can cause disfigurement or death. In order to avoid risks of accidents and fatalities, workers must be informed about conveyor safety features. It would also be beneficial to train workers on how to observe safety procedures and accident preventive measures around conveyor systems.

In addition to observing safety precautions within the working place, another way to prevent accidents is to have the conveyor system designed to minimize hazard points and pinch points. Hazard points and pinch points should be guarded by location which means making potentially hazardous locations inaccessible to employees.
